Bordeaux, seven new varieties allowed to fight climate change

The effects of climate change are beginning to be felt, summers that are getting hotter and rainfall, at least in Europe, have become the norm, and even the vine pays the consequences. And of course it looks for answers, which come both from the research and from the variety richness existing in the world viticultural heritage. It is from here that the Bordeaux producers, gathered in the Syndicat Viticole des AOC Bordeaux Bordeaux Supérieur, have fished to combat the effects of climate change: seven new varieties admitted to the production of the most important wine region in the world, including four black berried, Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets and Arinarnoa (born from the cross between Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon), and three white berried, Alvarinho, Petit Manseng and Liliorila (cross between Baroque and Chardonnay created in the 1950s), which after the go-ahead of the winemakers await the decision of Inao, the National Institute of Origin and Quality of France, which will have to approve, or not, the proposal of the winemakers. It is, as it is easy to imagine, of varieties that guarantee a greater natural resistance to vine diseases, such as powdery mildew and downy mildew, and a better ability to adapt to high temperatures. There are also limits in the proposal: the new varieties can replace up to 5% of the vineyard area of each producer, and compete up to 10% in the blend of a wine, with Merlot, which more than any other suffers from the warmer climates , first suspect to make room for new varieties. A real revolution, the one that promises, which will involve, at least potentially, 55% of Bordeaux production, equal to 384 million bottles, with the first plants that could see the light already between 2020 and 2021 .
