The objective is to rehabilitate the hundred kilometers of track between La Roche-sur-Yon and La Rochelle.

A journey time reduced to 4.25 hours, or even 4 hours, against a long journey of around 5 hours currently. This is one of the objectives of the long-awaited modernization work that the Intercités rail line between Nantes and Bordeaux will undergo. In a press release, the prefect of Pays de la Loire confirmed that the transformation of this dilapidated axis (the commissioning dates back to 1871!) Had finally started. The project, which will require an envelope of 152 million euros (the State, the SNCF, and the regional councils of the Pays de la Loire and Nouvelle-Aquitaine are the main financiers), is presented as one of the most important operations of renovation at national level. For a reduced journey time, of course, but always a little longer than taking your car.

It is in fact the portion between La Roche-sur-Yon and La Rochelle, 103 km long, which is mainly concerned. Today, due to significant wear of its constituents, the train speed has been reduced to 60 km / h instead of the 110 to 130 km / h normally authorized. A complete renewal of the track is therefore planned, with the installation of new switches, new signage and accessibility to the Luçon station. This is where the work began, with the construction this summer of a technical building, which will command the switches.

If the commissioning of the renovated line had been announced for the end of 2020, it will finally be necessary to wait until mid-2021 for the end of the site. By then, regulars of the line should already note that the section between La Roche and La Rochelle will be closed for more than a year, from January 2020 to May 2021. Replacement coaches will be set up during this cut. Temporary closings of certain level crossings will also be expected.
